## Description

The New Bedford Police Department (NBPD) is the municipal police service for New Bedford, Massachusetts, focused on serving the community with respect and empathy. Its officers and civilian staff reflect the city’s diverse cultures and backgrounds and follow a community-policing approach centered on trust, transparency, and ongoing engagement. NBPD works to build relationships with residents, local businesses, and community partners, using open communication and collaboration to understand and address community needs.

The department provides public-safety services through its stations and divisions and shares information through police logs, news updates, and public resources. Its website offers forms and reports, a tip-submission option, firearms information and FAQs, and animal-control information. It also provides details about the department’s history, leadership, community-policing work, and career opportunities for people interested in becoming police officers.

NBPD traces its organized history to 1794, when watchmen were established to guard against theft. Chief Jason Thody began leading the department on July 14, 2025.
