## Description

The New York Mycological Society (NYMS) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness, knowledge, appreciation, and protection of fungi. As a mushroom club for anyone interested in fungi, NYMS offers a range of opportunities for members to get involved. Their walks, held almost every weekend of the year, provide the best way to learn about fungi by observing, touching, smelling, and documenting them in the woods. Locations are decided a few days in advance for Pop-up walks, while Scheduled walks are publicized well in advance. NYMS visits 17 different New York City parks and also travels to locations outside the city in summer and fall. Leashed dogs and kids of all ages are welcome. For those interested in identification, NYMS organizes Zoom ID sessions every Monday, and anyone can join without prior knowledge. The club also offers a lecture series, covering scientific topics and hands-on skills, currently taking place on Zoom. NYMS has a beautiful newsletter, conducts workshops, participates in community science, and promotes community outreach and partnerships. They have a wealth of resources, including species lists, a searchable database, and a glossary of mushroom words. Though food-related events are currently on hold due to the pandemic, NYMS provides a lively presence on social media, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and a new Slack workspace. Members can borrow microscopes for up to two weeks, and membership comes with various benefits such as newsletters, meetings, events, discounted membership rate for NAMA (the North American Mycological Association), and access to website content.
