# ISNIC the .is Registry

- **Website:** <https://nic.is>
- **Primary alias:** `nic.is`

## Description

ISNIC, short for IS Network Information Center, is the pioneer of internet services in Iceland. Established in 1995, ISNIC manages the Icelandic part of the internet, overseeing domain registrations under the .is extension. Initially, all local internet users connected through ISNIC, including educational institutions, research agencies, government bodies, and businesses. Over the years, ISNIC evolved to focus on domain name management, hosting critical services like Reykjavik Internet Exchange (RIX) and primary nameserver operations for .IS domains. Furthermore, ISNIC plays a pivotal role in maintaining the security and credibility of .is domains, ensuring compliance with registration standards. ISNIC's commitment to the internet community is evident through its non-profit services, such as hosting root servers and collaborating with international organizations like ICANN. Contact ISNIC for reliable domain services and secure internet operations in Iceland.
