Founded by Dr. T. J. Lafeber, Jr., an authority in pet bird care and medicine, the hospital has been serving the community since its establishment in 1949. Initially catering to dogs, cats, and birds, Niles Animal Hospital quickly gained recognition for its exceptional services. In 1953, the hospital achieved accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and has maintained its accreditation ever since. Dr. Lafeber's expertise in avian medicine led him to become the chairman of the AAHA Committee on Avian Medicine in 1960. He extensively researched bird health, diseases, and care methods, earning the trust of private bird owners, pet stores, aviculturists, and breeders. The hospital's commitment to innovation and excellence is evident in its establishment of an in-house diagnostic laboratory, allowing for prompt results and immediate treatment. Niles Animal Hospital also takes pride in its remarkable product line, initially developed by Dr. Lafeber himself. The line includes nutritious bird diets, pellets, supplements, as well as hand feeding formulas for baby birds and Emeraid I and II for hospitalized pet birds. Following in Dr. Lafeber's footsteps, Dr. Peter Sakas, mentored by Dr. Lafeber, took over ownership of Niles Animal Hospital in 1985. Dr. Sakas, an esteemed avian veterinarian and author, continues to uphold the hospital's legacy of providing exceptional care. Niles Animal Hospital's dedication to excellence has garnered recognition from various publications and organizations. The hospital has been featured in Town and Country Magazine, Trends Magazine, and Chicago Magazine. Dr. Sakas has been acknowledged as one of the best avian veterinarians in Chicagoland by Chicago Magazine and has been named one of the nation's top veterinarians by the Consumer’s Research Council of America.
