## Description

NOIR is a Danish organization dedicated to protecting the oceans and uncovering criminal activity at sea. It works with national and international partners on maritime investigations, using research and analysis to build knowledge about how information can reveal illegal operations in the oceans.

NOIR’s projects combine publicly available data, open-source tools and investigative methods. Its completed work includes a practical guide showing how to use AIS and KML data to track marine dumping in Danish waters. In an ongoing project, the organization gathers and analyzes data to investigate the health of Danish waters and uncover activity at sea. NOIR has also monitored Dutch fishing vessels in cooperation with Danish network TV 2, contributing to reporting on suspected illegal fishing in Danish waters when vessels switched off their AIS signals. In Bergen, NOIR initiated an interdisciplinary bootcamp with Lighthouse Reports, where Nordic media participants gathered evidence concerning a Danish company’s evasion of sanctions. NOIR’s projects have received support from Velux Fonden.
