## Description

Nona Research Foundation is a Boston-based nonprofit working to broaden participation, improve access, and advance innovation in synthetic biology and bio-design automation. It supports the development and use of open-source software and tools, helping build a software commons for the field. Its approach encourages developers to follow rigorous engineering practices, including clear specifications, thoughtful design, implementation, testing, modularity, and concise documentation.

The foundation’s programs connect people across biology and software through mentorship, collaboration, and project development. NonaWorks is a four-day hackathon held during Biodesign Week, where participants develop bio-software projects with support from volunteers, expert office hours, and skill-building workshops. Teams present their work at Demo Day. NonaTalks brings the journey together with final project presentations, keynote speakers, and industry perspectives on open-source synthetic biology software. Together, these events form a pathway from early idea generation to sustained project development. Nona also offers software and services, shares open-source code, and invites supporters to contribute through donations and sponsorships.
