## Description

The National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) is a South African organisation responsible for radioactive waste management and disposal services. Its work is guided by South African policies and legislation, as well as international legal instruments developed under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). NRWDI promotes an integrated and accountable approach intended to prevent radioactive waste from placing an undue burden on future generations.

The Institute’s services include managing the safe handling, transport and disposal of radioactive waste. Waste is packed at its point of departure in metal or concrete containers, depending on its contents, and transported by road to Vaalputs under stringent safety and security measures consistent with IAEA transport regulations. NRWDI also provides information about the legislative framework and its disposal approach, and shares reports, news and updates on future projects and their impacts.

The Institute is governed by a Board appointed in accordance with the relevant Act, with the Minister of Electricity and Energy serving as its Executive Authority.
