## Description

The National Theatre Okinawa serves as a pivotal institution for preserving and promoting Okinawa's rich traditional performing arts, such as "Kumiodori," which is a designated Important Intangible Cultural Asset of Japan. Established in January 2004 in Urasoe City, it aims to foster cultural exchange across the Asia-Pacific region by leveraging Okinawa's unique geographical and historical attributes.

The theatre hosts a variety of performances, including regular and outreach shows showcasing Kumiodori, Ryukyu dance, and Ryukyu music, ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences. Additionally, it provides training programs for aspiring performers and caretakers of these traditions, ensuring the sustainable transmission of Okinawa's artistic heritage.

Moreover, the National Theatre Okinawa engages in research activities, collecting, preserving, and publicizing various materials related to traditional Okinawan arts, alongside fostering cultural dialogues through collaborative events with other Asian and Pacific performers. Guided by the Okinawa National Theatre Management Foundation, it resonates with local cultural identities while contributing to the arts landscape in Japan.
