## Description

The Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society (NWIGS) is a volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the genealogy and local history of Lake and Porter Counties, Indiana. Organized in 1970, the society collects, preserves, and disseminates information on genealogy, history, biography, and heraldry, while encouraging research and supporting its members.

NWIGS offers monthly meetings and classes, both in person and online, featuring local and national speakers, along with occasional opportunities for members to share discoveries. Its educational resources include workshop videos, handouts, presentations, and helpful research links. Members can access the TWIGS newsletter, exclusive indexes, books, records, and a keyword-searchable database.

The society also provides research materials covering Lake County, Porter County, and Northwest Indiana, including maps, records, historic postcards, and images. Its store offers genealogy publications, and its Pioneer Heritage Circle recognizes direct descendants of early residents of the two counties. NWIGS welcomes volunteers to support its board, committees, and record-indexing projects, and invites people interested in local history and family research to join or renew their membership.
