## Description

The National Writers Union (NWU) is a labor union representing freelance writers and creative workers across genres, formats, and media throughout the United States. It works to improve members’ working conditions and strengthen the rights and interests of independent workers in the media industry. Through organizing, collective action, and solidarity, the union advocates for fair workplace standards, copyright protections, freelance rights, freedom of speech, and responsible AI regulation. It also works with publications to promote minimum standards for freelance contributors and supports campaigns for greater pay transparency through member-maintained rate-sharing tools.

NWU members can connect through local chapters and professional divisions, including groups for book workers, digital media freelancers, literary translators, and Spanish-language writers. The union offers members support with grievances and contract negotiations, along with access to dental and vision insurance. It also provides press passes for eligible members and peer review letters for creative workers seeking O-1 visas, including non-members. The organization shares news, resources, and opportunities for writers to participate in advocacy and collective efforts.
