## Description

The New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS) is an essential tool used to evaluate the threat status of various wildlife species in New Zealand. This system categorizes species, subspecies, varieties, and forma according to their risk of extinction. The NZTCS is utilized to create valuable publications that list New Zealand's wild species and their threat classifications. These publications, an integral part of the international scientific literature, provide detailed information on the conservation status of different taxa. The system incorporates expert assessments conducted over a 5-year cycle, ensuring accuracy and relevance. From bats to marine invertebrates, reptiles to birds, these publications cover a wide range of species groups. The New Zealand Threat Classification Series sheds light on the conservation efforts required and highlights the species in need of urgent attention. Scientists, conservationists, and individuals passionate about preserving New Zealand's unique biodiversity can access the publications and contribute their knowledge to the ongoing assessments. Stay updated on the latest science publications by subscribing to receive updates via email. Furthermore, data from the publications can be downloaded from the NZTCS database, allowing for in-depth research and analysis. Contact threatstatus@doc.govt.nz for more information.
