## Description

The Oaklandside is a brand that focuses on journalism for Oakland. They provide informative and engaging news about a wide range of topics, including arts and community, business, city hall and policing, events, health, housing, and more. Their goal is to amplify community voices, share the power of real information, and investigate systems in Oakland. In addition to their news articles, The Oaklandside also offers a platform for community engagement and participation. They have recently launched a project on iNaturalist to track the harmful algae bloom in Lake Merritt and the Bay. By submitting observations of dead marine life, anyone can help scientists monitor the situation and understand the impact of the algae bloom on fish, bivalves, crustaceans, and other aquatic lifeforms. This valuable data will be used to inform policies and work towards mitigating the harmful effects of future blooms. By supporting The Oaklandside, you are not only contributing to a vibrant newsroom but also actively participating in an effort to safeguard Oakland's natural environment and community well-being.
