For more than two decades, it has studied developments in Portugal and internationally across television, radio, the press, journalism and entertainment. The organisation is also a pioneer in research on digital media, tracking the evolution of the internet, social networks and other digital media structures. Its mission is to produce knowledge and encourage open debate among academics, industry specialists, communication-sector stakeholders and the wider public. OberCom’s work spans audiovisual media, disinformation, media economics and management, digital innovation, journalism, and media and public policy. It shares research through publications and initiatives including the Digital News Report Portugal, the Communication Yearbook, and studies on topics such as artificial intelligence in journalism, climate-related disinformation and the audiovisual sector. The centre also participates in projects and observatories, including IBERIFIER, ALGOWATCH and OBS*.
