## Description

The Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) Australia is a vital regional hub dedicated to marine biodiversity data management, established in 2000. As the Australian node of a global network under the Census of Marine Life, OBIS Australia provides a comprehensive gateway to marine species distribution data sourced from various authoritative custodians. The platform facilitates research by enabling users to access and analyze a rich tapestry of marine life data, addressing geographical and ecological factors pertinent to Australian waters and adjacent seas.

OBIS Australia emphasizes data quality by ensuring that only contributions from recognized scientists and organizations are included. Users are encouraged to interpret data wisely, bearing in mind potential errors and gaps that exist due to the vast unexplored areas of the ocean. In addition to marine data, OBIS also collaborates with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Australian Antarctic Data Centre, driving forward initiatives to enhance biodiversity knowledge. Through advocacy for greater data availability and rigorous field studies, OBIS Australia actively works towards filling crucial knowledge gaps in marine ecosystems.
