About
Description
The Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC) is a brand dedicated to supporting, advocating for, and building the capacity of member Friendship Centres across Ontario. With a history dating back to the 1950s, Friendship Centres are community hubs that provide culturally based and appropriate programs and services for Indigenous people living in towns, cities, and urban areas. The OFIFC is governed by a Board of Directors, including representatives from member Friendship Centres, youth representatives, Elders, and a Senator.
In partnership with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), the OFIFC has developed the Declaration of Mutual Commitment and Friendship, fostering collaboration between municipalities and urban Indigenous communities. The OFIFC offers various programs addressing the needs of urban Indigenous communities, including programs for children and youth, education and employment, ending violence, health and wellness, homelessness and housing, justice, and urban programming. They also provide lifelong learning opportunities, such as Indigenous Cultural Competency Training and the Master of Social Work in Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency program.
With a focus on community-driven research, the OFIFC aims to improve the quality of life for urban Indigenous people in Ontario
