## Description

The Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) is South Africa’s independent regulator of healthcare services. Its mission is to monitor and enforce safety and quality standards in health establishments impartially and on behalf of healthcare users, with the vision of assuring safe, quality healthcare for all. The OHSC assesses public and private health facilities against national norms and standards through compliance inspections, using tools designed to measure adherence to requirements set by the Ministry of Health. It certifies establishments that meet the standards and takes enforcement action where facilities are non-compliant.

The OHSC also provides channels for users and others to report concerns. People can submit complaints about unresolved poor-quality care or non-compliance, report early warning system incidents involving serious breaches, and report fraud. Whistleblowers submitting complaints are guaranteed anonymity. Health establishments can submit annual returns, helping the OHSC understand their operating context. The organisation publishes reports, guidance, inspection tools, news and other resources, and provides information about its programmes, legislation, events and services.
