The History Center of Olmsted County (HCOC) is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich history of Olmsted County. Established in 1926, the Olmsted County Historical Society (now known as HCOC) began its journey in a small museum located in the basement of the Rochester Public Library. As the collection grew and the need for more space arose, HCOC moved into a new museum building in 1972. Today, HCOC owns and operates two historic buildings and two farmsteads, as well as offering seasonal tours of the famous Mayowood estate. At HCOC, visitors can explore various exhibits showcasing the county's history, participate in educational programs and outreach initiatives, and attend special events. The museum shop offers a range of unique items related to local history, and the garden plot rentals and farmers market provide opportunities for engaging with the community. Additionally, HCOC provides research resources and promotes historic preservation. By offering a gathering place for the community, HCOC aims to inspire and encourage exploration of the past. Their mission is to give people of all ages and backgrounds access to the past through interpretive programs, exhibits, research, publications, and events.
