The founders, Dr. Martin Carey and John Denny, were deeply inspired by the resilience and dedication of people in disadvantaged circumstances in South Africa. They believe that when communities are given support, belief, love, and encouragement, incredible things can happen. During a visit to Uganda, specifically Fort Portal, Martin and John were struck by the number of unfinished building projects and the poor state of schools and health facilities. They realized that the key to progress was not foreign intervention, but better physical infrastructure for Ugandans. And so, One Brick at a Time was born. Since its inception, the NGO has worked closely with local Ugandan organizations to identify needs and has successfully completed over 23 major building projects, including schools and health facilities. They have also attracted local funding and are proud to be both a registered Ugandan and UK NGO. Moving forward, One Brick at a Time aims to become a self-sustaining social enterprise, exploring initiatives like fair-trade and eco-tourism.
