## Description

The Ontario Poison Centre (OPC), operated and supported by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, provides expert toxicology advice across Ontario. Available by telephone 24 hours a day, every day of the year, the Centre assists members of the public with poison emergencies and questions about possible poisoning. Its team of nurses, pharmacists and physicians is highly trained in the treatment of poisonings and drug overdoses.

The OPC also supports health-care professionals caring for patients exposed to poisonous substances. Its toxicology experts collaborate with clinicians to promote current, evidence-based care and provide guidance on poison management. The Centre’s resources include patient-care information, emergency guidance, antidote information and materials on specific exposures.

Education and prevention are also central to its work. The OPC offers information on common poisons, household hazards, medicines, plants, mushrooms and other potential dangers, along with first-aid and poison-prevention resources. It shares educational content through teaching, printed materials and distance-learning technology, helping families and professionals recognize risks and respond to exposures.
