Open Babel is a versatile and collaborative chemical toolbox that enables seamless communication between multiple chemical data formats. The evolution of Open Babel began with Babel, a beloved translation tool for computational chemistry file formats. Over the years, it evolved into OELib and eventually transformed into Open Babel (C++) and JOELib (Java), both of which remain freely accessible chemical software toolkits. In contrast, Open Eye has developed a proprietary library called OEChem. This community-driven effort owes gratitude to numerous past contributors.
