The Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel in The Hague is a powerful reminder of the fragility of freedom during World War II. This German prison housed over 25,000 people between 1940 and 1945, many of whom were imprisoned for their resistance against the occupying forces. Also known as the Scheveningen prison, it was a place where individuals were held for interrogation and prosecution. The prisoners included members of the resistance, as well as Jews, communists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and black marketeers. Even during the war, the prison was already called the Oranjehotel, paying tribute to the courageous resistance fighters held within its walls. The Oranjehotel housed both famous and unknown prisoners, notably including Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, Rudolph Cleveringa, Titus Brandsma, George Maduro, Pim Boellaard, Corrie ten Boom, and many others.
