## Description

Oregon’s Boat is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to sharing the history and continuing legacy of the McKenzie River Drift Boat. Its central project is an award-winning documentary tracing how this distinctive Oregon vessel evolved and influenced river travel, guiding, and conservation. Told in five acts, the film follows innovators and river pioneers including John West, Veltie Pruitt, Prince Helfrich, Tom Kaarhus, Woodie Hindman, and conservationist Martin Litton. It explores design changes from early lightweight board-and-batten craft and square-ended boats to the double-ender built for rough water, as well as the boat’s role in Grand Canyon expeditions and environmental advocacy. The documentary also recounts the drift boat’s selection to represent Oregon at the 1976 Bicentennial exhibition on the National Mall, sponsored by the National Park Service and Smithsonian Museum. Oregon’s Boat presents the vessel not simply as a historic artifact, but as a living tradition shaped by today’s guides, builders, and river communities.
