## Description

Our Radioactive Ocean is a public science and community-sampling initiative led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It helps researchers track radioactive contaminants associated with the Fukushima accident and other nuclear discharges, and understand how they spread through the Pacific. The project invites individuals, schools, and community groups to fund and collect seawater samples, extending monitoring to locations that agencies may not regularly test. Participants can propose a sampling site and raise the cost of analysis and shipping; WHOI provides a sampling kit, instructions, and support with fundraising. Samples are processed and tested for radionuclides, including cesium isotopes that help scientists identify Fukushima-related contamination. Results are shared with participants and published on an interactive map, alongside educational resources explaining radiation, measurement, and potential health concerns. The initiative also offers access to current results, sampling guidance, news, and information about how to support ongoing research. Sample costs vary by location, and the project welcomes contributions to its general fund or support for specific sites.
