## Description

The Outland Trophy is a college football award presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) to recognize the nation’s best interior lineman. Established in 1946 through a contribution from Dr. John Outland, the award honors offensive and defensive interior linemen; ends are not eligible. Outland, a former All-American at the University of Pennsylvania, created the trophy to give linemen recognition for their contributions to the game. It is described as the third-oldest major college football award.

The winner is selected from three finalists named through the FWAA All-America process. The All-America Committee considers input from the association’s membership, selects a 26-player first team and identifies the finalists; committee members then choose the winner by individual ballot. The FWAA also recognizes Outland Trophy National Players of the Week during the season. The trophy is part of the National College Football Awards Association.
