Palabora, established in 1956, is South Africa's leading producer of refined copper. With a rich history dating back to the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, the company's open-pit copper mine and processing plants have produced over 2.7 million tons of copper. Today, Palabora produces approximately 60,000 tonnes of refined copper each year, fulfilling a significant portion of South Africa's copper demand. The Palabora Igneous Complex, a unique geological formation, is responsible for the occurrence of copper and a variety of other minerals such as phosphates, vermiculite, magnetite, and more. Palabora operates a large block cave copper mine and smelter complex, employing over 2,700 people. The company's refinery produces continuous cast rod for the local market and cathodes for export. Additionally, Palabora extracts valuable byproduct metals and minerals like zirconium chemicals, magnetite, and nickel sulphate. Palabora has also invested in an underground mine with a production capacity of 30,000 tonnes of ore per day, amounting to a US$410 million initiative. Furthermore, the company owns and processes vermiculite, a versatile industrial mineral with numerous applications, for global sales. With its rich mining heritage, commitment to sustainability, and diverse range of products, Palabora continues to play a crucial role in South Africa's mining industry.
