## Description

Pacific Fishery Management Council is an organization established by the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. They are responsible for recommending fishery management measures in the Federal waters off Washington, Oregon, and California. Their jurisdiction covers the U.S. West Coast Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends from 3 to 200 miles offshore. The Council manages commercial, recreational, and tribal fisheries for a variety of species including salmon, groundfish, coastal pelagic species, and highly migratory species. They work closely with the states to ensure consistent management of shared stocks. Stakeholders such as fishermen, processors, tribal members, environmental representatives, and the general public play an important role in the Council's decision-making process. Council meetings are held five times a year, and in preparation for each meeting, the Council staff prepares a briefing book that includes relevant information and public comment. The Council's recommendations are implemented by the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement and enforced by Coast Guard Districts and local agencies.
