## Description

The Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit founded in 1957 to preserve folk music, support its development, and connect people through participation and education. Rooted in the city’s folk community, the organization presents the Philadelphia Folk Festival, one of North America’s oldest and best-known outdoor music festivals. Its programs span traditional and contemporary folk music, welcoming audiences, artists, students, volunteers, members, and community partners.

Alongside the festival, PFS offers seasonal events and learning opportunities, including Fall Fling, Spring Thing, concerts, workshops, classes, community service programs, and participatory sings. PFS Presents features concert programming, while the Odyssey of American Music education program introduces participants to the country’s musical and cultural history. Activities range from informal group singing to large-scale concert presentations, supported by a network of dedicated volunteers.

Through presentation, participation, and education, the Society celebrates folk music’s history while encouraging artistic growth and experimentation. Its work serves Greater Philadelphia and reaches audiences beyond the region, helping sustain a diverse musical community for future generations.
