The story behind Platypod began when our CEO and Inventor, Larry, found himself faced with a dilemma during a hike through Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.

He had to choose between carrying a lens or a tripod, and reluctantly chose the tripod for stability. However, by the end of the hike, the extra weight left him feeling like he needed both a chiropractor and a cardiologist. Determined to find a solution, Larry searched for a lightweight and practical mini tripod but couldn't find one that could support a DSLR camera with a heavy lens.

After numerous attempts at rigging tripod heads to metal plates, he had a breakthrough and created a simple, sturdy, and flat plate that could support even the heaviest photography equipment. Thus, the world's most compact mini tripod, measuring only 4 mm thick, was born. Inspired by the duck-billed platypus and its flat and broad feet, our Platypods are designed with an ergonomic and elegant shape that is perfectly balanced for DSLRs and lenses.
