The Plovdiv 2019 Foundation prepared the candidacy for Plovdiv to become the European Capital of Culture in 2019 and actively works towards the realization of the project. Their mission is to make culture accessible to everyone and allow it to enrich our lives, making our city more vibrant and attractive.


With a diverse and convincing program, Plovdiv won the title of European Capital of Culture due to its balanced approach and realistic budget. The brand offers a wide range of events, both past and upcoming, aimed at merging, transforming, reviving, and relaxing the city. Volunteer programs are also available, along with opportunities for international collaboration supported by the EU Japan Fest organization.


The Plovdiv 2019 Foundation collaborates with partner organizations, artists, and institutions to ensure maximum community participation, the attraction of quality international content, and the promotion of Bulgarian culture abroad. As a unique project in Bulgaria, the European Capital of Culture develops specific knowledge and skills within the foundation and its partners, leaving a lasting legacy for future cultural initiatives
