## Description

The National Association for Poetry Therapy (NAPT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, interdisciplinary membership organization dedicated to promoting growth and healing through language, symbol, and story. It supports and enhances the profession of poetry therapy, bringing together members from fields including social work, psychology, education, counseling, healthcare, librarianship, chaplaincy, coaching, creative writing, and performance poetry.

Poetry therapy uses written and spoken language, imagery, metaphor, and symbolic expression to encourage personal growth, healing, and self-awareness. Its approaches can include poems, stories, song lyrics, journaling, bibliotherapy, narrative, storytelling, and ritual, and may be used in therapeutic, educational, community-building, and personal-development settings.

NAPT offers membership, professional resources, information about credentials and study, publications, and opportunities to connect with practitioners and organizations. Its programs include virtual events, open-mic sessions, regional gatherings, research activities, and an annual conference. The association also shares member websites and resources of interest, and invites people who support its mission to join its community and receive news about events and programs.
