## Description

Pōhaku Pelemaka is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit working along the coastline of Puna, Hawaiʻi. Founded in 2013 as KAPONO Red Road and reborn under its current name in 2021, the organization takes its name from “raw rock,” a reference to new land formed by volcanic activity and its potential for growth.

Its mission is to protect, perpetuate, and enhance the qualities of Puna makai, support Native Hawaiian wellbeing, and pass intergenerational knowledge and practices to future generations. The organization pursues these goals through culturally grounded educational, charitable, and scientific work focused on reconnecting with, studying, stewarding, protecting, and celebrating the coast. It partners with ʻohana, community members, government agencies, and public and private organizations.

Pōhaku Pelemaka’s programs include Kahu ʻĀina, Nā Lauʻō ʻo Kaʻakepa, Niu Fest, Hala Fest, and Hoʻolauleʻa. It also shares resources such as maps, videos, and photos, offers opportunities to learn ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and invites the public to support its work through donations and partnerships.
