Description
Potential Energy is a non-profit organization based in Kampala, Uganda, dedicated to protecting the environment and improving the lives of refugees, displaced people, and others in developing countries. Their mission is achieved through the promotion of cleaner burning and more efficient cookstoves. To date, 85% of the stoves sold by Potential Energy have benefitted refugees or displaced people in Uganda and Sudan, with two-thirds directly sold to the end-users, proving their value to those with limited disposable income.
The organization operates in Uganda, where 99% of the population relies on wood, charcoal, coal, and kerosene for cooking, contributing to severe air pollution and causing the deaths of thousands of Ugandans annually. Potential Energy focuses on direct sales efforts within Uganda, while also collaborating with partners to expand their reach into new markets. Notably, the organization has undertaken successful projects in Sudan and Ethiopia.
In Sudan, Potential Energy distributed 44,000 improved cookstoves to displaced persons in the Darfur region, benefiting over 265,000 people. In Ethiopia, they modified the Berkeley-Darfur Stove to meet local needs, though further expansion into the country is planned for the future. Potential Energy has a rich history, with its origins dating back to 2005 when Founder Dr.
Ashok Gadgil was tasked by the United States Government to develop a technical solution to alleviate suffering in Darfur, resulting in the creation of the Berkeley-Darfur Stove. Over the years, the organization has evolved, pioneering a distribution model and achieving significant milestones, such as becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit and receiving grants and awards from organizations like USAID and The World Bank. Their work continues to gain momentum, with the demand for the Berkeley-Darfur Stove growing steadily.
Successful partnerships with NGOs, universities, retailers, and wholesalers have helped Potential Energy in their efforts towards financial sustainability. Furthermore, their commitment to carbon neutrality is evidenced by their registration of the program for carbon credits with Gold Standard. The team behind Potential Energy is led by Dr.
Ashok Gadgil, a renowned scientist and inventor who has received numerous accolades for his contributions to environmental technology. With a doctorate in physics from UC Berkeley, Dr. Gadgil brings exceptional expertise and leadership to the organization.
Through their innovative approach and dedication, Potential Energy is making a tangible impact on the environment and the lives of vulnerable communities. Their work is not only transforming cooking practices but also creating a path towards a healthier and more prosperous future
