ICPRB, the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the waters and related resources of the Potomac River basin. As the Nation's River, the Potomac River is of great importance to the six million residents of the basin. ICPRB achieves its mission through a combination of scientific research, regional cooperation, and education initiatives. Founded in 1940 by an Act of Congress, ICPRB is an advisory agency made up of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, along with the federal government. Initially focused on addressing pollution, ICPRB's responsibilities expanded in 1970 to include water resources and related land issues. Through collaboration with various stakeholders and partnerships, ICPRB has made significant strides in improving the river's water quality. However, ongoing threats such as population growth, land use changes, and chemical contaminants necessitate continued regional attention and action. ICPRB's dedicated staff includes professionals from different disciplines, including environmental engineering, aquatic ecology, biology, and communications.
