About
Description
PrideVMC is a brand that is dedicated to creating a better world for the LGBTQIA+ veterinary community. They prioritize wellbeing and encourage individuals to embrace their authentic selves. With a history spanning over 30 years, PrideVMC has a deep-rooted connection to the LGBTQIA+ community.
It all began in 1977, following the Stonewall riots, when several gay veterinarians met in Atlanta during the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) convention. They placed an ad in The Advocate, the national gay magazine, and organized the first gathering of the Association for Gay Veterinarians (AG Vets) in Las Vegas the following year. Despite the challenges and prejudice faced, the group gained recognition and grew through word-of-mouth and mutual contacts.
In subsequent years, they were joined by various LGBTQIA+ veterinarians and students. Unfortunately, the AIDS pandemic brought about the decline and disbandment of AG Vets in 1988. However, a new generation of LGBTQIA+ veterinarians emerged to advocate for clients with AIDS.
Organizations such as Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) and PETS DC, with strong LGBTQIA+ veterinary leadership, played a pivotal role in bringing the community together. In 1991, under the acronym I'M GLAD (International Membership of Gay and Lesbian Animal Doctors), the association continued to grow, and the name was eventually changed to the Lesbian and Gay Veterinary Medical Association (LGVMA). Today, PrideVMC aims to provide resources, support, and education, as well as foster a sense of community among LGBTQIA+ veterinarians and students.
They offer mental health support, allyship resources, and educational materials on gender diversity, among other subjects. PrideVMC is not only a brand but a driving force behind the progress and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the veterinary profession
