## Description

Prison History is a collaborative project backed by historians at The Open University, dedicated to exploring and preserving the narrative of imprisonment across the British Isles from 1500 to 1999. The initiative includes two major datasets: the 19th Century Prisons database, which catalogs over 800 incarceration facilities that operated between 1800 and 1899, detailing their operational dates, locations, and historical significance. The second component, Local Lock-Ups, encourages community members to contribute information about local lock-ups, both existing and lost, enhancing public engagement with these historical sites. This dataset not only includes descriptions and images of more than 500 structures but also invites personal stories related to their historical context. Supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project aims to expand its resources and deepen understanding of criminal justice's impact on local communities. Engaging with Prison History offers valuable insights into the evolution of societal responses to crime and punishment throughout history.
