## Description

Quantile Labs is an independent laboratory focused on AI safety in Africa. It evaluates and provides assurance for AI systems, helping regulators and the public understand their capabilities, limitations and risks. Its work emphasizes transparent methods, evidence that can be independently checked, and clear reporting of study size, uncertainty and access to the system being assessed. The laboratory says it accepts no money from the operators of systems it evaluates, publishes all studies—including those with no findings—and gives the subject of a study an opportunity to respond, with that response published alongside the work.

Quantile Labs currently evaluates text-based systems, studying one language at a time and examining how often they are confidently wrong. Its open-source tool, Touchstone, records evaluation plans, questions, results and file fingerprints so others can review the process and verify the calculations. The tool is available under the Apache 2.0 licence. Quantile Labs also develops AI safety talent and community through its research and public-facing materials, including methods, blog posts and notes.
