The Red Door Family Shelter has been providing emergency shelter and support to families, refugees, and women fleeing violence since 1982. With a mission to break the cycle of homelessness, they address the specific needs of families in crisis through a dedicated and caring staff team. Their services go beyond providing shelter and basic necessities.

They offer 24-hour emergency housing, on-site medical assistance, child care, counseling, case management, safety planning, education, legal and immigration assistance, advocacy, parenting and life skills training, and extensive programming for children and youth. They also provide transitional support and outreach, assistance to find housing, a moving program that offers donated furniture and moving assistance, and a weekly food bank. Operating as a non-profit registered charity, the Red Door Family Shelter serves the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) with funding from the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.

Donations and private fundraising enable them to provide additional programs that make life easier for their residents and help them achieve long-term objectives. The name Red Door derives from the church doors of the WoodGreen United Church, where the shelter was initially located. These doors, painted red during the 1930s, became a symbol of hope and help.
