## Description

Redox OS is an open-source, Unix-like operating system developed by the Redox OS nonprofit and its community. Written in Rust, it uses a microkernel design focused on security, reliability, and safety, with drivers running in userspace and operating-system services provided through Schemes. Redox aims to offer a complete alternative to Linux and BSD for desktop and cloud use.

The project provides source compatibility for POSIX, Linux, and BSD programs, supports GCC and LLVM, and includes a growing selection of ported software. Its desktop environment features a Rust-written windowing system, window manager, and compositor, with support for technologies including X11, GTK3, SDL, and OpenGL and Vulkan software rendering. Redox also offers hardware support for Intel and AMD, ARM64, and RISC-V systems, plus boot options such as NVMe, SATA, USB, and full disk encryption.

The Redox website provides downloads, release notes, documentation, development guides, and package resources. An active community contributes through GitLab and Matrix, while donations, merchandise, and the annual Redox Summer of Code help support ongoing development.
