## Description

The Reptile Database is a comprehensive catalogue of all living reptile species, encompassing snakes, lizards, turtles, amphisbaenians, tuataras, and crocodiles. With over 10,000 species and 2,800 subspecies listed, this database focuses on taxonomic data including names, distribution, and literature references. While not yet incorporating ecological or behavioral information, efforts are underway to enhance the database with such data. Operating without commercial interests, the database relies on contributions from volunteers and curated data from published sources. Users can help improve the database by submitting updates or photos. Founded in 1995 by Peter Uetz, the database is now maintained by a team of unpaid volunteers, including editors, contributors, and social media managers. With programmatic access available via an API, the Reptile Database continues to grow, with over 11,600 species, 62,000 references, and 10,000 web links as of September 2021.
