## Description

RESIST is an interdisciplinary research cluster based at Hannover Medical School, bringing together around 60 experts from research and clinical practice, six institutions and additional partners. Supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), it investigates why some people are especially vulnerable to infections and how pathogens affect the body, with the goal of improving diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Its work focuses on four areas: genes, the immune system, bacteria and viruses. Researchers study genetic influences on infection risk, immune-system ageing, the microbiome, vaccines and immunotherapies, bacterial infections and resistance, and persistent viral infections. RESIST places particular emphasis on protecting vulnerable groups, including newborns, older people, people with weakened or suppressed immune systems, and those with implants. The cluster also maintains extensive research cohorts, drawing on data from more than 10,000 people to better understand individual susceptibility and support more targeted care. Alongside research, RESIST offers scientific events, publications, videos and podcasts, and career and onboarding support for researchers. Its current funding period runs from 2026 to 2032.
