KVRTA, or Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority, has been serving the Kanawha Valley since 1971 as a public transportation authority. With a service area spanning approximately 913 square miles, including Kanawha County and portions of Fayette and Putnam Counties, KVRTA plays a vital role in connecting communities. Operating a network of 20 fixed routes centered around Charleston's commercial center, KVRTA ensures convenient access to transportation for residents. Their services are available seven days a week, with the earliest routes beginning at 4:25am and continuing until 12:55am the next day. Additionally, KVRTA operates the Kanawha Alternative Transit (KAT), which provides complementary paratransit services during the same days and hours. To meet the transportation needs of the community, KVRTA maintains a fleet of 49 vehicles, including transit coaches, minibusses, and a trolley for fixed-route service. They also have 14 cutaway vans dedicated to the KAT paratransit service. Recently, KVRTA opened the new City Center Station in downtown Charleston, serving as the hub and transfer center for all routes. This state-of-the-art facility replaces the Transit Mall on Laidley Street and forms part of a multi-use, multi-modal space that includes commercial and entertainment venues, hotels, and government offices. Led by Executive Director Sean Hill and President Todd Goldman of the KVRTA Board, the authority continues to provide reliable and accessible transportation options to the community.
