Rural Development Initiative (RDI) is a brand that aims to transform subsistence agriculture into market-oriented agriculture in Rwanda. With 78.6% of households engaged in crop production and agriculture contributing 28% to the country's GDP, RDI recognizes the struggles faced by small-scale farmers, including non-functional markets and limited access to financing. As a solution, RDI offers training and market connections to smallholder farmers, protecting them from price shocks and increasing their profits.

At RDI, we have developed the "Smallholder Farmer Commercialization Model" which focuses on investing in extremely rural and small-scale farmers through cooperation and self-help. By 2026, we aspire to build one of Rwanda's largest communities of small-scale farmers, providing sustainable solutions to the barriers hindering their prosperity.

Our approach includes farm business management training, networking and policy advocacy initiatives, and market linkages that go beyond mere training. What sets us apart is our commitment to youth involvement in boosting agriculture in Rwanda.
