About
Description
Safe Voices is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1977 to address the needs of battered women and children who had nowhere else to turn. When it was established, there were no resources for domestic violence victims in the community, including housing and support programs. The organization started as an emergency shelter called the Pearl Residential Facility, which allowed women and their children to find refuge in the homes of local families.
Throughout the years, Safe Voices has faced challenges, including a fire that destroyed their facility. However, they have persevered and are now the primary provider of support services and shelters for domestic violence victims in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties. In 2010, the organization changed its name to Safe Voices to reflect their commitment to serving all victims, regardless of gender, and to give survivors a voice.
Their mission is to offer emergency and support services to victims, educate the community about the seriousness of domestic violence, and work toward legislative changes to end abuse. In addition to their emergency shelter, Safe Voices has local offices that provide one-on-one support, children's services, advocacy, and professional trainings. The organization is committed to inclusivity and does not discriminate on any grounds.
Safe Voices is supported by various organizations and is a member of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence
