Saikoku Sanjusansho, often referred to as the oldest Kannon pilgrimage in Japan, encompasses a spiritual journey to 33 sacred temples. Originating in 718 AD at the founding of the Daigoji Temple by the monk Tokudo, the pilgrimage was inspired by a meeting with Enma Daio, who urged the monk to establish the Kannon pilgrimage to alleviate suffering. Despite initial rejection, the pilgrimage was revived 270 years later by Emperor Koubu, becoming a revered route spanning over 1000 km across seven prefectures. By collecting the 33 sacred seals (Goshuin) at each temple, pilgrims seek spiritual fulfillment and a passage to paradise.
