## Description

Sankofa Video, Books & Café is a renowned brand that was founded by Shirikiana and Haile Gerima, the talented filmmaking couple. The brand takes its name from their internationally acclaimed film, SANKOFA. Established in 1998, Sankofa Video and Books is a haven for videos and books centered around the experiences of people of African descent worldwide. The name SANKOFA represents the Adinkra concept of going back to our past in order to go forward. Despite facing challenges in funding and distribution due to its powerful portrayal of a woman revisiting her past on a plantation and the rebellion of enslaved Blacks, SANKOFA received countless awards and international recognition. Located in Washington, DC, near Howard University and Benjamin Banneker Sr. High School, Sankofa Video, Books & Cafe is committed to promoting African diasporic culture and history. The Gerima couple, who have been creating thought-provoking films since the 70s, continue to operate their production company, Mypheduh Films, and Negod Gwad Productions within the Sankofa building. By adopting a unique distribution model, Sankofa successfully kept SANKOFA in theaters nationwide for two years, reflecting the brand's dedication to community and collaboration. Explore Sankofa's extensive collection and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of African heritage and creativity.
