## Description

Sankofa Communications is a cultural education and media venture led by Luana M. Graves Sellars, a Gullah Geechee community activist, preservationist, writer, and speaker. Inspired by the Akan concept of Sankofa—returning to the past to help improve the future—the brand shares and preserves the history, traditions, people, and contemporary concerns of the Gullah Geechee community.

Its services include keynote presentations, speaking engagements, educational classes, and online and social media content. Sellars has taught popular OLLI courses on Lowcountry Gullah history and Hilton Head’s first families, and has written and documented more than 300 articles about Gullah culture, history, traditions, families, and individuals. Through its Lowcountry Gullah work, Sankofa Communications makes this knowledge accessible in a factual, engaging format.

Sankofa Productions extends the brand’s storytelling into visual media, creating and sharing short videos and documentaries. Its productions include Freedom Day: The Historic Families of Mitchelville, Juneteenth: The Birth of Freedom, and Harriett Tubman: From the Railroad to A Spy.
