## Description

Fasnachtsgesellschaft Sans Gêne is a traditional Basel carnival society founded in 1922, bringing together more than 200 active members to celebrate and preserve the city’s living Fasnacht culture. The society has three sections: the Stamm, the young group Sans Gêne Strizzi, founded in 1932, and the Alti Garde, established as a separate section in 1982. Children from the first year of primary school can learn drumming and piping with the Strizzi, while younger children can get an introduction to carnival through the Luuszäpfe. Sans Gêne also offers piping lessons for adults and invites prospective members to try carnival with the Strizzi through an introductory experience. Members rehearse, make and decorate masks, paint lanterns, and prepare carnival materials together in the society’s workshop. Social activities are an important part of the group, alongside shared music-making and rehearsals. The society also has two club cellars available for birthday celebrations and other events in a carnival setting, and shares photographs, repertoire, and information about its history and activities.
