## Description

Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies is an organization supporting Lama Alan Wallace’s Buddhadharma activities and exploring the nature and potential of human consciousness. Its work responds to concerns about materialism, consumerism, environmental degradation, and declining meaning by bringing contemplative traditions into conversation with science. The Institute’s two central themes are advancing understanding of consciousness through collaborative inquiry and investigating the causes of genuine well-being through ethics, mental balance, and insight.

Its projects include the Center for Contemplative Research, with centers under development in Tuscany, Italy, and Matiri Valley, New Zealand. The Institute also offers Cultivating Emotional Balance, an educational program that uses emotional experience to support personal happiness and healthier relationships. Resources available through its website include retreat audio, podcasts, guided meditations, and teachings from Lama Alan Wallace and guest teachers. Its shop features books on Buddhism, science, attention training, meditation, and contemplative practice, along with registrations for retreats and access to free retreats and meditations.
