South Carolina First Steps is the state's leading early childhood initiative, designed to prepare children for success in school and life. Since its establishment in 1999, First Steps has taken a holistic approach to accomplishing its mission. The organization partners with families, early educators, and communities across the state to support children from birth through age five.

First Steps offers a wide range of programs and services that aim to improve children's health, strengthen families, expand access to quality early care and education, and ease the transition of rising kindergartners into school. As the connector and convener of all early childhood serving agencies, First Steps operates the Early Childhood Advisory Council (ECAC) to coordinate collaborative efforts and ensure effective support for families and young children. With a vision of all children reaching their highest potential, First Steps works diligently to ensure that children start school well-prepared, with the engaged support of their parents, caregivers, and communities.
