## Description

Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Funchal is a private social solidarity institution in Madeira, Portugal, founded in 1508 by royal charter from King Manuel I. With more than five centuries of history, it supports older people and families experiencing vulnerability through residential care and community initiatives. The institution accommodates around 130 older adults across two residential facilities in Funchal and Caniço: the Complexo Social de Santa Clara and Lar Jardim do Sol.

Its Complexo Social de Santa Clara brings together residential care, rehabilitation, assisted-living residences and a day centre in central Funchal. The institution also offers opportunities for people to contribute through volunteering, donations and recruitment, and invites eligible taxpayers to direct 0.5% of their income tax to its work at no cost to themselves. Individuals can support its services with a donation, including contributions starting at €5, or by giving time as a volunteer. Through its care facilities and community support, Santa Casa continues a longstanding mission of welcoming and assisting people in need across Madeira.
